Amy Lane's writing does a great job of capturing Talker's fugue state as she rapidly switches the narrative through events in Talker's past, most tragic, but some sweet and loving.
When Brian's efforts to protect Talker backfire and land him in the hospital in critical condition, Talker's mental health implodes. Talker is only able to exist with Brian's constant love and support. The sessions, and much of this book, are painful to read. Brian convinces Talker to meet with a counselor, but he only agrees if Brian is there to support him. A traumatic experience with another man from Talker's past takes a toll on his mental health and strains Brian's ability to help and protect him.
